World Environment Day, celebrated on June 5th, is a global event organized by the United Nations to raise awareness about environmental issues. It is the largest global platform for environmental public outreach, celebrated by millions of people across the world. This year's theme, #GenerationRestoration, emphasizes the need to revive and restore damaged ecosystems, aiming to create a sustainable future.
The theme for 2024 is #GenerationRestoration, focusing on restoring ecosystems and addressing urgent environmental challenges. Here, we offer a variety of activities and resources to help schools participate and educate students on the importance of ecosystem restoration. Help raise awareness and understanding of the environmental issues facing our planet in your classroom with these Purple Mash activities.
Teach students about pollution's impact on the planet and how they can help restore the natural balance. Children could create a poster about how pollution contributes to global warming, or write about water pollution and its effects.
Explore interactive lessons on climate change using the Climate Change Slideshow and quizzes to discuss how people could reduce the impact. Read the DK texts on Climate Change, and write a letter to the headteacher, giving three things the school could do to reduce their carbon footprint.
Introduce students to the concepts of renewable energy and sustainable living. Explore renewable energy solutions for a school project, or create posters to encourage the conservation of energy.
Study how different animals are in danger of losing their homes, and how they may need to adapt to restored environments, by using the Habitats and Biomes Resources. You could even look at effects on food chains. Could children design some animal habitats around the school to restore some space for creatures using 2Design and Make?
