National School Sports Week

June 8, 2023

National School Sports Week is back for 2023 and will run from the 19th to the 25th of June. Created by the Children’s charity, the Youth Sport Trust, the first event was run in 2008 and has been held annually ever since. The main aim of the week is to highlight the importance of school sport for children’s physical and mental health.

This year the charity wants to make sure that all children in the UK are active for the Chief Medical Officers’ recommended minimum time of 60 minutes a day, and they want families, schools and partner organisations to #PledgeToPLay to ‘play for fun, play for 60’. You can find out more about the week and add your pledge here.

Our free Active Lunchtime pack is perfect to download to use during the week. The active lunchtimes pack has been created for children to lead games and activities at lunchtime and break times in school.

Children can apply to be a Sport leader and run the activities outlined in the pack.

Each card outlines a different activity and resources needed to run it. These can be printed and laminated and used by Sports leaders.

This free pack is a selection of some of the activities that are included in the full pack that is available with a subscription to Striver.

Striver PE Scheme of Work

Striver is a great resource to use during the week, Striver has been created with a sole purpose: to improve primary aged pupils' long-term physical and mental wellbeing. We do that by ensuring children of all abilities feel   motivated and engaged, and teachers of all experience levels feel confident and in control.

The package includes a whole school PE scheme of work (EYFS -Y6) with over 400 PE lessons, supported by six wellbeing units, all housed in a clever website that makes planning and assessment a breeze.

The lessons focus on developing the underlying key skills that make up all sports and activities, things like using movement to create space and controlling objects with your hands or feet. Breaking things down into key skills creates more opportunity for children to experience improvement. Each unit starts with a Personal Best Activity where children set and record their personal best. At the end of the unit the children try and beat their personal best score and Striver shows you exactly how much each child has improved by.

Striver is available for £350 (+VAT)  per year representing amazing value for money and a great way to invest Sport Premium funding to ensure that teachers develop confidence in teaching PE.
