Celebrate European Day of Languages with Purple Mash

Sept. 20, 2024

European Day of Languages is celebrated on 26th September each year. One of the main messages of the European Day of Languages (EDL) is that Language skills are a necessity and a right for everyone.

Using Purple Mash to promote language learning

Purple Mash can be used in a range of ways to promote language teaching and celebrate European Day of Languages in schools. You can find all our resources here.

We have 12 topics each within our French and Spanish areas, these cover topics including My Family, Numbers and The Weather as well as others. For each topic area there is an introduction slideshow accompanied by a collection of games, quizzes and writing templates which can all be set as 2Dos. You’ll also find supporting worksheets to download, these include a selection of printable and oral activities that can be used in class.

The French folder also includes 12 songs with accompanying activities and a lyric and translation sheet for teachers.

Ready-made resources

There are a range of template fact files and leaflets that children can use to find out more about the countries in Europe. They could also write a postcard from a European Capital, including what they have seen and eaten, including language phrases from the country that they have visited. Or they could test their knowledge of European Countries and capital cities with our maps to label.

Or, why not set up a language blog within the school celebrating the languages spoken within the school community – these could include phrases, recipes, songs and customs celebrating different languages and communities.

Creating bespoke language resources

It is also easy to create bespoke resources in Purple Mash to celebrate European Day of Languages in your school– 2Question, 2Connect, 2Publish and 2Quiz are just some of the applications that could be used. For example, your class could create one of the following using the language that is taught in your school for Modern Foreign Languages (MFL):

  • Use Multiple choice in 2Quiz to match colours/objects to the correct word in your chosen foreign language
  • Match the correct words
  • Label body parts
  • Spelling activities
  • Weather map for a capital city
  • Birthday card
  • Shopping basket and list
  • Create an animation and use the record button to add speech

These are just some of the ideas how Purple Mash could be used to create resources to support MFL in your school.
